DIY Dry Shampoo

To be honest I’m not the most skilled “Do-it-yourself”er out there! I usually get frustrated and prefer to buy something rather than make it.

But, I use dry shampoo. A lot. But, with my wavy hair structure, normal dry shampoo is very… well… drying.

The kinds that are safe for my hair are often very expensive, and not always that effective.

Enter this dry shampoo recipe that my mom made. She found the original recipe here and I’ve since made a few changes cause I can.

I find this shampoo leaves my hair feeling fresh, voluminous and just as clean as any other brand. It does leave a slight residue, but in my experience all good dry shampoos that don’t dry my hair out do the same. I love that I can make it fit my particular needs for scent using my essential oils as well!

From the original article linked above:

Ingredients
For light hair:
¼ cup arrowroot powder
2 drops Lavender oil
2 drops Rosemary oil
2 drops Peppermint oil

(see my changes below)

For dark hair:
2 tablespoons arrowroot powder
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
2 drops Lavender oil
2 drops Rosemary oil
2 drops Peppermint oil

(see my changes below)

Instructions

  1. Put arrowroot powder, cocoa powder (if using), and essential oils into food processor.
  2. Pulse until well combined.
  3. Store in glass jar.
  4. To use, apply powder to roots and oily parts of hair using an old (washed) makeup brush.

So the above is pretty much what I do, but I occasionally change up the oils. Any oils for hair or scalp health are on the table, including but not limited to:

For Dry Hair:

  • Patchouli
  • Geranium
  • Sandalwood

For healthy growth:

  • Rosemary
  • Arborvitae
  • Lavender

For oily hair:

  • Rosemary
  • Basil
  • Cypress

For Lightening:

  • Lavender
  • Orange
